Will celebrate women's day if men's day observed too: Trinamool MP

Trinamool Congress MP Shatabdi Roy said on Tuesday that she would celebrate International Women's Day only if International Men's Day will be celebrated on March 9.

"I personally don't celebrate this day as I want women's day everyday throughout the year. I will celebrate International Women's Day on March 8 only when the International Men's Day would be celebrated on March 9," Roy said in Lok Sabha while speaking on International Women's Day.

"I am saying so because I believe in equality," she added.

Stressing on the need of education for women, Roy said that until a women gets educated, she would not be able to earn money and equal men.

"The discrimination with an women would be there until she is financially strong as a man. Income is the thing which can make her equal to man and for earning, education is must,"she said.

Citing examples of television advertisements, she said that women have been made a product like televisions, fridges and vehicles.

"We don't need reserved seats in buses but we need to drive a bus. We don't need exemption while filing taxes, we need to increase our earnings upto Rs.five crore so that we can contribute to taxes," she said.
