Newly appointed Goa Governor Mridula Sinha Sunday said she will study the state's gambling and alcohol addiction problems during her stint.

Speaking to reporters after being sworn-in at a ceremony at Raj Bhavan on the outskirts of Panaji, Sinha also said she would work for the welfare of the "poor, women, children and families" in the small coastal state.

When asked about her thoughts on social issues in Goa like gambling and alcohol addiction, Sinha, a noted litterateur and social worker, said: "I will study the problems".

Cheap alcohol and gambling, both in the dozen-odd government endorsed casinos operating in the state as well as other illegal forms of gambling, are a cause for social concern, according to civil society groups.

Besides, Sinha said she was working on the biography of Mandodari, the wife of Lanka's mythological king Ravana. "It will be out in about two months," she said.
