Dutch winger Memphis Depay said he did not understand former head coach Jose Mourinho's choices at Manchester United and was probably not good enough for him to keep the footballer at the English club.

Depay vowed to be back on top of his game. The 22-year-old made just one start for United since Mourinho took over from former coach Louis van Gaal in the summer.

Subsequently, Depay joined Lyon in a deal worth around 25 million euros ($26.8 million) in January.

"I have no bitterness towards Mourinho," he was quoted as saying by beIN Sport on Friday.

"I did what I had to do in training. Of course, I didn't understand his choices, but he was the boss. I had to accept those choices. I think I was not good enough for him. But it's okay, I'm showing my quality here.

"I'll be back to the top and we'll see what will happen."

He also felt that the lack of playing time at United left him frustrated and as a youngster, he needs to play to improve as a footballer.

"Leaving Manchester United? That was not complicated. I'm young, I need to play. When I think about the last time I played a whole 90 minutes before coming here, it was a year ago. It's incredible," he said.
