This refers to the editorial "After the deluge" (June 25). One must assess seismic hazards in Uttarakhand in the light of excessive tourist growth and ill-planned development. Moreover, such disasters fall under the purview of natural disaster prevention and management departments, and is dealt by civil officers and resources. The scientist community is not appropriately involved in planning better hazard reduction approach. For disaster management, we need to follow a strategy to cover prevention, precaution, protection, preparedness and mitigation. Not only these, it should include accountability, monitoring and the ability to change policy in the light of current conditions.
