Letters: No choice for Indian voters

A K Bhattacharya, in his column “Moving away from coalitions?” (New Delhi Diary, April 4), hopes that Indian voters will move away from voting in coalition governments to voting in governments with clear majorities. This shift will be enormously beneficial, but the limited choice before the Indian voter makes it impossible in the near future.

At the Centre, Indian voters have to choose among a family-crazy formation, a Hindutva-crazy formation (both without inner-party democracy) and a rag-tag bunch of state-level, super-populist politicians that hope to coalesce into a third front.

The need of the hour is for capable professionals – who will not look for personal gains from the politico-bureaucratic system – to get together to form new political parties with well-defined ideals and programmes and complete inner-party democracy. This is not easy, but must be done if India is to realise its developmental potential.
