Letters: Some state-level impetus

The results of the Delhi Assembly elections mark the definite decline of the Congress. Mahatma Gandhi wanted the party to be wound up after the attainment of independence but its leaders did not heed his advice, as they were anxious to capture the levers of power. The people of the country are contributing to the realisation of the dream of the Mahatma. Congressmen should reflect on the pathetic state of the party and its leadership. Unlike the other parties, the Congress does not have a second line of leadership. Sonia Gandhi herself might be wondering as to what she had done for the party and the country that she has come to occupy her exalted position except for the fact that she had married Indira Gandhi's son. What will happen to the party if the Queen Mother decides to call it a day and migrates back to her motherland with her brood, including the Crown Prince?

It is time that the Congress develops indigenous leadership and allows leaders to come up at state levels. Think of the days when we had state leaders such as B C Roy, Kamaraj Nadar and others who were listened to with respect by no less than a person than Jawaharlal Nehru.
