J Jayalalithaa, who lost the seat after she was convicted in a corruption case and sentence to four years in jail in a graft case (she got bail later), won from Srirangam constituency in 2011 defeating her DMK rival N Anand by a margin of 41,848 votes.
AIADMK's candidate S Valarmathi was leading since morning and at the end of counting she clocked 1,51,561 votes, compared to 55,045 votes clocked by Anand M Subramaniam of the BJP and K Annadurai of the CPM got 5,015 and 1,552 votes respectively.
The byelection was held on Friday, and there were 29 candidates in the fray.
The constituency fell vacant after AIADMK chief and former chief minister J Jayalalithaa was disqualified as an MLA when a special court in Bengaluru convicted her in a disproportionate assets case on September 27 last year.
