YSR Congress Party president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday praised the Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi for his “administrative capabilities.”

He, however, added he wished Modi would associate himself with a secular plank and bring all the opposition onto a secular platform.

The remark of Jagan is likely to be a cause of concern to the ruling Congress at the Centre and the state as it was widely believed to be banking on his support after the 2014 elections.

Addressing his first press conference after coming out of jail on bail, Jagan denied having any deal with the Congress saying he would not have been in jail for 16 months if such a thing had happened.

The industrialist-turned-politician said his party's earlier announcement of its willingness to support a secular alliance did not necessarily mean the United Progressive Alliance.

“Many parties have secular credentials. These include the Communist parties and the Janata Dal (United),” Jagan said.

Jagan said he would hold a public meeting 'Samaikya Shankaravam'  (clarion call for unity) in Hyderabad in the third week of October.

Earlier in the day, Jagan had given a representation to governor E S L Narasimhan, seeking him to convene the state Assembly before the Union Cabinet prepared a note on the proposed bifurcation of the state.

Jagan said if the Assembly was convened after the preparation of the Cabinet note, it would not be of much use if the resolution against bifurcation of the state was adopted. Hence, he wanted the House to convene before the note was prepared.
.
He accused the Congress of deciding to divide the state for  "votes and seats" and the Telugu Desam Party of keeping quiet over the issue, fearing it would "lose votes and seats".

Incidentally, Jagan's would be the third major public meeting after the Congress Working Committee  decided on July 30 to accord statehood for the Telangana region.

The first meeting was held by the Andhra Pradesh Non-Gazetted Officers belonging to coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions against the bifurcation of the state. This was followed by a meeting organised by the Telangana Joint Action Committee demanding the Centre to expedite the process of forming the Telangana state.
