Uttar Pradesh Provincial Civil Services (UPPCS) has sought intervention of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav against Centre's move of making written examination mandatory for their promotion to IAS cadre.

At an emergent meeting of the association yesterday, it was decided to meet the Chief Minister and seek his intervention on the issue.

The officers were of the view that the fresh examination for promotion to IAS would raise a question mark on state civil service examination through which they are selected.

"The move will also create hindrance in administrative works as the officers will go on long leave for preparation for promotion to IAS cadre," an officer said.

The Centre has recently made it mandatory for state civil services officers to face a Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) test and interview for their promotion to the three All India Services (IAS cadre).

Till now, the selection of state services officers into the three All India Services (IAS, IPS and IFoS) was being done on the basis of review of their seniority and Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs).

The Ministry of Personnel recently changed the rules for promotion from state services.
