ITT Corporation, a global leader in water and wastewater management, transport and treatment, has established a Centre of Excellence (COE) with customer support and application engineers in Mumbai that will support all core needs for wastewater treatment. With more than 1,000 sewage treatment installations around the world, ITT is providing Indian authorities and the executing agencies advanced technology such as Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR), Intermittent Cycle Extended Aeration System (ICEAS), and other key equipment responsible for effective and efficient working of sewage treatment plants.

Pollution caused by sewage discharged from cities and towns is a chief cause for degradation of water resources. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has prepared and published a report ‘Status of Water Supply, Wastewater Generations and Treatment in Class-I Cities and Class-II towns of India, in Dec 2009.  The report draws attention to the ever widening gap between estimated sewage generation and treatment capacity.*

Mr. Rahul Sonawane, Manager- Customer Application Support at ITT India, pointed out that the use of such technologies can reduce two critical resources in a sewage treatment plant – power required to operate the plant and land required to set-up the plant.

Three water treatment projects demonstrating these advantages are already in development in various cities of India.

A 30 million litres per day (MLD) sewage treatment plant (STP) is being set up by Urban Improvement Trust (UIT) at Kota, Rajasthan to address sewage treatment for the entire city of Kota. Sam Yamdagni, managing director of ITT India, said “ITT has leveraged its advanced technology solutions and deep applications expertise to develop a solution that will not only result in huge cost and power savings but will also take care of the water needs of this scarcity-stricken zone.”

ITT is also setting up a sewage treatment plant for the Bhakra Beas Management Board residential township to counter 8 MLD of sewage being dumped into an open canal. The STP is expected to be ready for trial commission by the end of October 2010.

Apart from sewage treatment, the advanced SBR and ICEAS technologies can also be applied to the treatment of effluents or polluted water released by industries to combat both environment damage and water scarcity.

“These solutions beyond being power and land efficient also offers superior design flexibility and demand extremely low maintenance,” said Shashi Naik, Director and Head of ITT’s COE.

ITT is also helping the Jasole Water Pollution Control and Treatment Trust to triple the capacity of their 2.5 MLD capacity common effluent treatment plant (CETP) at Jasole in Rajasthan. The higher capacity plant will utilize less space and is expected to be completed within ten months.
