The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of East Singhbhum, Amit Kumar said apart from the five death on the spot as many succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
The DC said around 12 seriously injured have been admitted in the hospital.
The mishap occurred when the passenger laden pickup van collided with a speeding trailer near Bela village on the National Highway 33.
Local JMM MLA, Kunal Sarangi, who reached the spot, himself joined the rescue operation and shifted the injured to hospital.
