Assam government today said 12 suspected jehadis belonging to Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) are at large in the state since 2014.
Replying to a question raised by AGP MLA Pabindra Deka in the state Assembly, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said security agencies have not been able to arrest 12 JMB members in the state after the Khagragarh blast in Burdwan district of West Bengal.
After 2014 blast by JMB, a total of 52 members of that module have been arrested from Barpeta, Chirang, Baksa, Nalbari, Bongaigaon and Goalpara districts in Assam, he said.
Following the recent terror attack in Dhaka, two suspected JMB men were arrested from Lower Assam, he said.
Patowary informed the House that the government has alerted all the SPs of the districts and asked to keep a strict vigil on any doubtful person.
"Besides, security in all sensitive places like railway station, airport, Kamakhya temple, refineries and shopping malls have been beefed up," he added.
The local government has also asked both state and central intelligence agencies to work in coordination, Patowary said.
"The Unified Command is in charge of security of Assam and it is fully prepared to handle any situation. On July 28, we have a joint meeting of all agencies. There we will discuss all issues again," he added.
Stating that threat perception from jehadis are always there in Assam, Patowary appealed to the people not to panic as the administration is fully capable of handling any terrorist activity.
