12 orphan girls married in a mass marriage function

Twelve orphan girls were wedded here today in a mass marriage function held by the city-wing of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS).
The IRCS claimed to have performed the job after duly verifying the bridegrooms' antecedents.
The girls having no one to call them their own, became the part of their own families and started a new life today, said a beaming IRCS Deputy Commissioner-Cum-President Basant Garg after the function.
The function was graced by several reputed persons of the city including Venus Garg, Chairperson of Hospital Welfare Section, Amritsar.
The marriages of the 12 homeless and destitute girls, who were inmates of State After Care Home and Sahara Short Stay Home, Amritsar was supervised by the Red Cross.

Dr Basant Garg said the aim behind the effort was to provide these homeless girls, deprived of a family, a real family of their own to be loved and cherished.
These girls would now be reintroduced and rehabilitated into the larger society, he said.
"Sincere efforts were made to marry the inmate girls of marriageable age. 12 girls of the Home were chosen for the marriage. Suitable matches were selected for them after proper verification of their antecedents through police and sarpanches, who also testified to their characters, jobs and properties or the source of income," he said.
