14 persons killed in stampede after makeshift bridge collapses

The incident took place as the people ran helter and skelter, leading to the stampede. Fear-stricken people trampled on each other after the bridge collaped at around 1900 hours, Superintendent of Police (SP), City, Jayant Kant said.

Most of those killed and injured in the incident were women and children who were returning home after the 'Arghya' at the ghat to the descending Sun God, he said.

The toll may rise as the condition of some of the injured persons was critical, the SP(City) said.

The bodies of those killed in the stampede have been sent for post mortem at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) at Patna, Kant said, adding the the injured persons have been taken to various hospitals for treatment. (MORE)
