: The works of 18th century Jesuit Priest Arnos Padrem like 'Puthan paana' (New Hymn), Devamatavinte Vyakula Prabandha ('poem on the Distress of the Divine Mother'), Umma Parvam (Epic Song on Divine Mother') will soon be rendered in English, two noted Indologists said.
Chaturandhyam (mystic epic on 'Four Ends of Man'), Janova Parvam (Epic Song of Saint Genevieve) and an edition-cum translation of this unpublished Malayalam and Sanskrit, would soon be rendered in English, Indologists Prof. Christophe Vielle and Dr Jean Claude Muller told reporters here.
They said the three-century old Arnos Padre's Sanskrit Grammar 'Grammatica Grnadonica', an online edition had been published in Potsdam University (Germany) in 2013.
Hanxleden arrived in Surat in 1700 and later proceeded to Kerala with the intention of combining missionary work with learning Sanskrit and Malayalam, he said, adding that Padre founded Arnos House and Forane Church at nearby Veloor in 1724 and was vicar there for over 20 years.
During his stay, he authored many books in Sanskrit and Malayalam and publicised the importance of Vedic literature in Europe, when learning Sanskrit was taboo for Non-Brahmins.
The church at Veloor and his house, with priceless murals of immense architectural value, were declared monuments in May 1994 under the Kerala Ancient Monuments and Archaelogical Sites and Remains Act, 1968 Vielle said.
He said a team of scholars from Belgium and Luxemburg in collaboration with the Arnos Padre Academy here planned to promote his linguistic and poetic achievement as also places where the priest was active in Kerala in the 18th century.
To promote the place of activity like Pazhuvil where he died in 1732, Veloor, Ambazhakad and Sampaloor, very precise Google maps were prepared last year, he said.
They would be converted into tourists' attractions in due course for indologists, scholars and researchers for knowing India's culture and heritage, Vielle said.
To a query, Vielle said the late Herman Gundert (1814-1893) was greatly influenced by the works of Padre introducing Indian culture and hetritage to Europe to a great extent.
