Two women were killed in rain-related incidents in Mayiladuthurai in Nagapattinam District and Kulithalai in Karur district late last night, police said today.
A 70-year old woman died when a wall of her house collapsed around midnight in Terezhundur near Mayiladuthrai while 45-year old Vasantha was killed when lightning struck her at E Puthur near Kulithalai.
Revenue officials said incessant rains lashing several parts of the state have caused damage to crops, including paddy, in areas such as Kudavasal, Tiruvarur, Nannilam, Tiruturaipoondi, Valangaiman, Needamangalam and Mannargudi, adding that the extent of damage was being assessed.
According to Cavery Delta Farmers Association President Punniyamurthy, paddy crops in 45,000 acres were submerged. Besides, cotton and black gram crops also would suffer damage due to incessant rains, he said.
