One Mohd Iftiqar Iqbal lodged a complaint with Rein Bazar Police station and showed to the police the message on his Facebook account about the demise of Mumtaj Ahmed Khan, MLA of Yakutpura Constituency.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered.
"The complainant requested to take necessary action into the matter as family members, relatives and sympathisers of the MLA went into shock by reading the message," DCP (South Zone) V Satyanarayana said in a release.
"On questioning Mohd Rasheed, it was revealed that he has created the message just for the sake of fun," the police officer said.
The DCP has warned of stern action against those spreading provocative messages, rumours to perturb communal harmony, breach of peace in the city and damage of personal reputation, dignity and freedom with the help of social media.
