Three persons, including two sisters, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in thefts in five-star hotels in the city, police said today.
The accused sisters, Shabana and Sanjo, residents of Rajgarh, MP, allegedly used to enter marriage functions in wedding finery and then decamp with valuables while the hosts were busy attending to guests, said B K Singh, DCP (New Delhi).
An auto driver, Altaf Khan, who used to take them to marriage functions, has also been arrested, he said.
The trio used to roam around in the specific areas during wedding season and if they saw a 'baraat' proceeding towards a venue, they would mingle with the crowd and enter the wedding venue, said another officer.
On January 31, Shree Ram Khetan filed a complaint alleging that one of the jewellery bags that his wife was carrying during their daughter's wedding on January 29 at Hotel Shangri-La Eros was missing.
The bag contained a gold chain, diamond ring, 24 silver coins and one mobile phone.
During investigation, footage of CCTV cameras installed in the hotel was analysed and two smartly-dressed women were seen roaming inside the marriage function, said the officer.
While the hosts were busy attending to the guests, they stole the jewellery.
Sources were deployed and it was learnt that few members of the gang known as Sisters Gang, will be coming to Uttam Nagar.
A trap was laid near Uttam Nagar (East) metro station and the trio were arrested yesterday, said Singh.
"During interrogation, they told police that in view of marriage season, several groups of people had come to Delhi to commit thefts in marriage functions. They stay at various railway stations in Delhi. Altaf is also a member of the gang and he uses his auto rickshaw for transporting them to various marriage functions," said Singh.
The women used to enter the functions, loiter around the stage and target the host who carries cash and jewellery bags.
"The accused persons told police that they had committed a number of thefts in marriage functions in Delhi. After committing the theft, the women used to run away from the spot in the auto," said the officer.
A gold chain and diamond ring, worth a lakh each and 24 silver coins have been recovered. The auto rickshaw has also been recovered.
