21 ex-law students sentenced to jail over violence

A court here today sentenced 21 former law students to three years imprisonment and acquitted 22 others in a case related to violent clashes between two groups of students in the Dr Ambedkar Government Law College premises here in 2008.
Pronouncing the verdict in the jam packed court hall here, XVII Additional Sessions Court Judge Gomathi Nayakam held all the 21 accused guilty under IPC section 324 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons and means) while convicting 19 of them under section 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon) also.
The Judge also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on the two of the convicts and Rs 15,000 on others.
All the convicts were released on bail.
The court acquitted 22 students.
The case relates to violent incidents on November 12, 2008 between two groups of students in the campus of the college which had overtones of a caste clash.
After a student with a knife was thrashed by a group in the college campus, it became a free-for-all subsequently for full 90 minutes. Violent scenes were witnessed and police accused of being silent spectators.
