Rabat (Morocco), Feb 17 (AP) A Moroccan military court has convicted 24 Western Saharan activists for their role in the deaths of 11 Moroccan soldiers in 2010, giving nine of the defendants life sentences. The verdict came early today morning for charges such as murdering members of security forces, accessory to murder, and creating a criminal group. In addition to nine life sentences (including one in absentia), there were four for 30 years, eight for 25 years, 2 for 20 years, and two others released for time served. In October 2010, thousands of Saharans set up a protest camp outside the city of Laayoune demanding jobs and housing. On November 8 security forces attempted to clear the camp and were met with armed resistance. Two Saharans also died in the fighting. (AP) RBL 02172142 NNNN
