According to a complaint by Thomas Cook (India) Limited general manager Ankit Gupta, the firm's assistant manager Sumit Kumar (30) was given Rs 2,22,78,683 in foreign currencies at the firm's IGI branch yesterday to deposit it at its Connaught Place branch, said DCP Jatin Narwal.
His phone was switched off and after several hours he called from Noida informing that the money was robbed of him near Shivaji Metro station, the officer said.
During interrogation, Sumit admitted that the robbery story was made up to misappropriate the foreign currencies, he claimed.
The accused revealed that after collecting the foreign currencies he reached Shivaji Stadium Metro station and met Rohit Kumar (27), an assistant manager at the same company, and his elder brother Rahul who were waiting for him in a car, the officer said.
