On December 28, the body of Ramesh Kumar was found with a bullet wound to his chest. The inquest proceedings were being carried out by the Crime Branch. Police had found blood stains on the door and outside the room where the body was found.
A medical board constituted to carry out the postmortem submitted its report a fortnight ago.
According to the report, there was a muzzle wound in his chest. An officer privy to the probe said they are awaiting the gun residue report to establish if he shot himself or was shot by someone else.
The family of the deceased had claimed that he was killed. The officer, however, said they had not found any evidence to suggest someone entered the police station and killed him.
"There were blood stains found outside the room but they might be there since someone might have tried to revive and help him. It is likely that person is posted in the police station and is not coming forward since he might be scared," the officer said.
Police are also probing the reason behind Kumar's death.
"There was no suicide note found. Neither was he facing any issues on the family front nor he was having problems on the professional front. We have also found that he did not have any rivalry with anyone so as to prompt anyone to kill him," the officer said.
