The deceased were identified as Natu Halpati (45), his sister Manju Halpati (50) and her son Jatin (25), all residents of Vapi.
Investigations revealed that Jatin had lost his mental balance few years ago and was undergoing treatment.
To visit a Navsari-based psychiatrist, Jatin's mother Manju and maternal uncle Natu had arrived at Vapi railway station along with Jatin in the morning to catch a Navsari- bound train, the police said.
"As they were waiting for the train, Jatin suddenly jumped on the railway tracks in a bid to flee. To catch him, Manju and Nathu also jumped onto the tracks, when a goods train hit them, killing them on the spot," Government Railway Police (GRP) Assistant Sub-Inspector of Manu Rathva.
