At least four persons including three policemen were injured in grenade attacks at an imambargah near the busy Nagin Chowrangi here late last night.
Muslims belonging to the minority Shia community had assembled for a Muharram congregation when some unknown persons threw hand grenades from an overhead bridge at the entrance of the imambargah, police said.
"The hand grenades were thrown from the overhead bridge but fortunately they landed a few yards away from the imambargah and exploded," SSP (Central), Aamir Farooqi said.
"Some policemen on duty have been injured in the explosion," he said.
Farooqi said the attack appeared to be aimed at creating fear and discontent ahead of the main Ashura processions.
This is the fourth such attack on an imambargah in Pakistan's biggest city since Wednesday evening as Shia Muslims prepare to mark the 10th day of Muharram (Ashura) by taking out processions and holding Majlis.
On Wednesday, there were bomb blasts and grenade attacks on two imambargahs in North Nazimabad and New Karachi, in which around a dozen people were injured.
Angry Shia youths had taken to the streets after the explosion to protest the alleged inadequate security.
Security has been on high alert for the 9th and 10th of Muharram with thousands of police and paramilitary rangers personnel stationed all over the city to prevent any major terrorist attack.
