Yesterday, infuriated over the death of a theft accused under suspicious circumstances while being taken back to jail after court hearing, villagers clashed with a police party in Badaun and set a police station and a jeep on fire.
According to SSP Atul Saxena, Harvinder Singh, a resident of Salempur village, was handed over to police by locals on charges of stealing a cattle.
The clash started after news of Singh's death spread, locals rushed to the spot. They gheraoed policemen and severely beat four of them while setting their jeep on fire, the SSP had said, adding they also set the nearby Main Bazar Police Chowki on fire.
