Nearly 6,000 personnel of central paramilitary SSB will soon be deployed for anti-Naxal operations duties in the Left wing extremism-hit areas of the country.
The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) was withdrawn from these operations in 2011 when it used to be deployed in Chhattisgarh. Now three battalions are deployed in Bihar and Jharkhand alongside other central forces like CRPF, BSF and ITBP.
The force, according to sources, will depute additional six battalions (about 6,000 personnel) to undertake Naxal offensives in Jharkhand and West Bengal, by replacing CRPF battalions present in these areas for long.
The force is tasked with guarding Indian borders with Nepal and Bhutan.
Talking about the recent killings of two of its personnel (civil wing) in Assam's Chirang district by suspected militants, SSB Director General Arun Chaudhary said the presence of the local faction of the NDFB "has increased" in a limited area and the force is taking all precautions to protect its personnel deployed there.
"The reasons for these killings are under investigation... We also suspect some personal reasons in this incident. There is no threat to the troops or the civilian component of the force working in these areas and we are alert," he said while interacting with journalists, two days before the 50th Raising day of the paramilitary.
The activities of the local faction of NDFB has increased in Baksa and Chirang districts of Assam, the DG said, adding the force is coordinating its operations with local police.
The SSB was raised in 1963 in the wake of the Chinese aggression and at present the force has close to 76,000 personnel in its ranks which is equivalent to 75 battalion.
