The vehicular population in the national capital registered a 135.59 per cent jump between 1999-2000 and 2011-12 to touch 74.53 lakh, Delhi Economic Survey said today.
However, 2011-12 registered a minor dip in annual growth rate of vehicular population - from 7.44 per cent in 2010-11 to 7.27 per cent.
The city had a vehicular population of 31.64 lakh in 1999-2000, while it touched 74.53 lakh in 2011-12, the survey said, adding that the urban transport scenario in the city is "fast warming up".
The highest growth of vehicles during the period was observed in taxis (707 per cent). There was a rise of 313 per cent in the number of cars and jeeps during the same period.
"The annual growth of vehicles in Delhi increased from 4.72 per cent in 1999-2000 to 8.33 per cent in 2006-07. There after it decreased to 7.27 in 2011-12. During the same period, the number of vehicles per thousand population increased considerably from 253 to 436," the survey said.
However, it said, there was a "contradiction" with regard to actual number of vehicles plying on Delhi roads. A large number of vehicles registered in Delhi can be seen plying on NCR areas.
"Transport Department is making efforts to estimate the actual number of vehicles in Delhi by taking into account vehicles that have outlived their life due to any account, transferred to and from other states," the survey said.
It also noted that road network of the capital has increased from 28,508 km in 2000-01 to 32,663 kn in 2011.
The Survey said Delhi has emerged as a major wholesale trade centre for North India and it is estimated that 78 per cent of vegetables and fruits, 49 per cent of fuel, 44 per cent of iron and steel and 47 per cent of food grains are traded in Delhi are destined for other states.
