A total of 940 vehicles have been fined for not having a proper pollution under control (PUC) certificate during a special drive, launched two days ago by the Delhi government's Transport department.
According to Transport department officials, the drive was launched on April 24, and since then 7,309 vehicles have been checked, and 940 were fined Rs 1,000 each for not carrying the PUC certificate.
"Today, total 1,931 vehicles were checked and 225 of them were prosecuted," said an official.
A total of 130 officials from enforcement wing of the department have been deployed at various junctions across the city as the checking was on round-the-clock, he said, adding lack of manpower had drastically affected such initiatives by the department.
Delhi High court, in the last week of March, had ordered the Transport department to launch a drive against those vehicles plying without PUC certificate.
The drive was put on hold due to imposition of Model Code of Conduct for Lok Sabha elections and deployment of department officials on poll duty.
Those not carrying a PUC certificate is fined Rs 1,000 for the first offence and Rs 2,000 for the second and subsequent offences.
There are over 75 lakh registered vehicles in the city.
