AAPSU demands early solution to refugee issue

The All Arunachal Pradesh Student's Union (AAPSU) today said that it would accelerate its movement for immediate solution to the decades-old refugee issue in view of rising crimes and increase in the number of refugees in the state.
"The refugees are committing crimes including rape, murder and extortion in different parts of the state posing a threat to the lives of the indigenous people," the union said in a statement here, accusing the government of failure to tackle the issue.
The refugees, mostly belonging to Chakma and Hajong tribals from neighbouring Bangladesh, have been living in the state since 1990s.

The apex students' body of the state held a meeting on Thursday with the refugee group and the Joint High Power Committee (JPHC) constituted by the state government under the chairmanship of Lok Sabha member Takam Sanjoy.
It was decided in the meeting that the JHPC would visit refugee inhabited areas of the state to assess the situation.
