Amdavad Book Fair to celebrate 100-years of cinema

Visitors at the Amdavad National Book Fair, beginning from May 1 here, will get a slice of literature and movies through an exhibition organised to celebrate 100 glorious years of Indian cinema.
"Posters, images, records, booklets and other literature on Indian movies, adapted from books authored by some of India's finest writers, will be on display," Rajkot-based Centre for Art, Craft and Culture director Ghanshyam Gadhvi said.
"Various forms of literature available on movies, adapted from books authored by Govardhanram Tripathi, Kanaiyalal Munshi, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Rabindranath Tagore, Bimal Mitra, Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay, among others, will be exhibited," Gadhvi said, adding that works of modern writers, which have been made into movies, are also being shown.

Munshi is a Bharuch-born Gujarati writer, whose novel "Prithvi Vallabh" was made into a movie twice with the same name by Manilal Joshi and Sohrab Modi.
Gadhvi further stated that literature on adaptations of works by George Bernard Shaw, Henrik Ibsen, William Shakespeare are also being exhibited.
The exhibition aims to educate and inform citizens about milestone movies of yesteryears, Gadhvi said.

"The medium of movies is important for creation of social values. Yesteryear writers observed society and played a vital role in creating strong social structure," Gadhvi said.
Apart from entertainment, the exhibition presents movies that have helped in transformation of society, he said.

Meanwhile, Ahmedabad Muncipal Corporation's (AMC) Deputy Municipal Commissioner (New West Zone) D P Desai, who heads the civic body's communication wing said that the fair, which had 175 stalls in its inaugural edition last year, has 320 stalls this year with prominent publications like Penguin, Grolier International, Sage Publication, IRH Press, among others also making it in.
