Artist presents works reminiscent of his decade-long journey

Inspired by the idea of finding something "refreshing" in the ordinariness of life, an artist here has come up with a retrospective that encapsulates his decade-long journey.
The ongoing exhibition at Visual Arts Gallery here, shows Vikash Kalra's evolution as an artist.
Kalra, a self-taught artist, says he is keen to present a chaotic yet happy state of human life in his paintings and sculptures.
The artist, who is presenting his paintings in the form of affordable digital prints, wants to reach out to the masses while experimenting with different themes.
"Art should not be restricted to the rich. I want my work to reach out to the masses, which can be done only when you keep the price of the paintings within the reach of the common man," says Kalra.

Inspired by progressive Indian artist F N Souza, Kalra follows a mix of high energy and lowlife motifs to highlight "personal relationships" such as love, sensuality and eroticism.

Kalra, in one of his famous paintings, has used animal heads instead of human ones. He says the inspiration for the work came to him after reading 'Profile of a Criminal Mind' by British author Brian Innes.
"There is a hidden animal in all of us and the theme let me transpose the human heads with animals and birds. The drawing reminds me of people whom I met in my life."
The artist says his works are a result of "unconscious choices".

"My works are a result of unconscious choices and I don't control how the end result would look like. I believe in complete interlocking of image and paint so that each movement of the brush on the canvas alters the shape and idea of the image."
Kalra's exhibition also includes a large collection of sculptures made in glass fibre. The artist says his sculptures reveal the inner-child of humans.
"It is inspired by the growing up of human beings and is a manifestation of child-like expressions. It showcases varied nuances of human life that evolve everyday."
The exhibition is set to continue till March 31 at India Habitat Centre here.
