Assam, Meghalaya to start joint police op along border

Assam and Meghalaya police today decided to initiate joint operation against the terrorists of Gendamari incident in which seven people were killed.
Assam ADGP (Law and Order) A P Raut told reporters that efforts will be on from both the states to seal the Assam-Meghalaya border.
Immediate focus will be to prevent any kind of untoward incidents during the upcoming Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council elections from November 13 to 25 and several police outposts are being set up along the state border, he said.
The two states have agreed to launch a joint operation to nab the militants involved in the Gendabari massacre.

Officials from both sides discussed movement of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and United Achik Liberation Army (UALA) along the Assam-Meghalaya border. Both states have agreed to set up a camp on the Assam side to conduct joint police patrolling.
The meeting, which took place at the Assam Police Headquarters here, also agreed upon allowing the Army to conduct operations along the sensitive areas within the radius of 20 km from the border, another senior police officer present in the meeting said.

Besides, senior officers from the two forces discussed issues like coordination with central agencies, active intelligence sharing and sealing of borders.

The meeting was also attended by senior officials from the Army, CRPF and intelligence agencies.
Earlier this month, suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) indiscriminately fired from automatic weapons upon a group of people gambling on the occasion of Diwali at remote Gendamari under the area of Aagia police station, killing seven persons and injuring 10 others.
Yesterday, 5 policemen were gunned down by suspected GNLA militants in the heavily forested area of Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district.
