With vast experience as an intelligence officer, the 1990 batch IPS officer Kulkarni hailing from Solapur in Maharashtra was posted as Special IG (Establishments) before taking charge as Crime Branch chief.
"I am trying to understand the set up here and will give my best to meet the expectations," said Kulkarni, Joint Police Commissioner (Crime).
Described as the second high profile post after the Mumbai Police Commissioner position in the financial capital, the post had been lying vacant since February 16, the day when Joint Police Commissioner Sadanand Date was relieved and sent to New Delhi on a central deputation with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Starting his journey as Assistant Superintendent of Police (Nanded), 51-year-old Kulkarni served as Additional Superintendent of Police at Jalgaon and Superintendent of Police at Buldhana.
He also served at the United Nations mission in Kosovo before returning to the country and worked as Deputy Police Commissioner at different wings in Mumbai.
Since 2002, he worked in Intelligence Bureau (IB) during which he served in Delhi, Arunachal Pradesh and Mumbai by collecting intelligence information on terrorism and Maoism among others.
