B'desh seeks India's response on murder suspect extradition

Bangladesh today said it has sought India's response to its extradition request of a multiple- murder suspect who was arrested in Kolkata last week.
"We have written to the Indian authorities, and are waiting for their response," Bangaldesh's junior foreign minister Shahriar Alam said.
Nur Hossain, a local leader of ruling Awami League who was arrested by the Anti-Terrorism Squad of West Bengal Police along with three other accomplices, is wanted in Bangladesh for killing seven people in suburban Narayanganj about two months ago.
The seven people were kidnapped by assailants from the suburban river port city on April 27 and their nearly decomposed bodies were retrieved from the Shitalakya River on May 1.

The incident had sparked a massive public outcry as the families of the victims alleged that several personnel of elite anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were involved in the murders.
It had embarrassed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government and prompted it to immediately sack two army and navy officers.

India is yet to convey Bangladesh of Hossain's arrest.
"We cannot comment on the media reports," he said.
State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday said the ministry initiated necessary steps to bring Hossain back to Bangladesh.
He had expressed hope that Hossain's repatriation would be an easy process as the two countries have an extradition treaty.

Bangladesh had earlier sought Interpol's help to track Hossain down and also informed India that he could have fled to West Bengal.
Bangladesh Police have so far arrested 16 suspects including the three army and navy officers in connection with the sensational case.
