A Chandrapur bandh called by the Chandrapur Zilla Arogya Sangharsh Samiti to press for a Government Medical College in the city and ban proposed 4G spectrum transmission towers in the city, brought the city to a standstill from today morning to evening.
Former MP and Congress leader Naresh Puglia lambasted the Maharashtra government for the inordinate delay in setting up a Government Medical College here by stating that people have already taught a lesson to the Congress during the recent Lok Sabha elections.
Further delay and indifferent attitude towards the issue would spell doom for the party during the forthcoming Maharashtra assembly elections, he said.
Addressing reporters at Gandhi Chowk here on Friday noon at the venue of his agitation, Puglia urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to look into the matter and resolve the issue expeditiously.
He urged the Chief Minister to intervene in the matter of 4G spectrum network, since around 100 proposed transmission towers which are set to be erected in the city by Reliance Jio would lead to health hazards to citizens here.
It may be mentioned here that the Maharashtra government had sanctioned a Government Medical College (GMC) for the district during 2012-13.
Later, a Medical Council of India (MCI) team visited the city to assess facilities that are available in the city.
Despite MCI's recommendation and suggestions to the state government, the proposal is being delayed, it was alleged.
Activists of the Chandrapur Zilla Arogya Sangharsh Samiti also demanded appropriate decision over installation of 100 mobile phone towers in the city.
A delegation of 34 corporators of the Chandrapur Municipal Corporation along with president of Chandrapur Zilla Arogya Sangarsh Samiti, Ramdas Raipure, submitted a memorandum addressed to the Maharashtra Chief Minister to district collector, requesting the government to take immediate steps to resolve these issues.
