"His condition remains very critical. Doctors are trying their best to see there is improvement in his health condition," CPI national secretary D Raja said.
Earlier, in a statement issued by it, CPI had said, "Bardhan is critical but fighting. He had brain hemorrhage. Doctors attending on him are making all-out efforts to save him. He is still in the ICU."
Among those who called on the ex-CPI general secretary at the GB Pant Hospital today included JD(U) president Sharad Yadav, All India Forward Bloc general secretary Debabrata Biswas and secretary G Devarajan, AAP leader and Delhi minister Gopal Rai and Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury.
92-year-old Ardhendu Bhushan Bardhan has been a leading figure of the trade union movement and Left politics in Maharashtra. He had won as an Independent candidate in the Maharashtra Assembly in 1957.
He later rose to become the General Secretary and then the President of the All India Trade Union Congress, the oldest trade union in India.
Bardhan moved to Delhi politics in the 1990s and became the Deputy General Secretary of the CPI. He succeeded Indrajit Gupta as the General Secretary of the party in 1996.
