The Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, enforced in March this year by the state government, bans slaughter of cows, bulls and bullocks and also consumption and possession of their meat.
Activists of some organisations working for the protection of cows had, after a tip-off from locals, informed the Worli police this morning about illegal sell of beef in the area following which police conducted a raid at the shop.
"Following the complaints, we reached the shop and have seized the beef and sent it to veterinary doctors to ascertain whether it is cow meat," Worli's senior inspector of police Vinay Kulkarni said but refused to divulge any further details in the matter.
Meanwhile, Sharad Gupta, a member of Bhartiya Govansh Rakshan Samwardhan Parishad, who had complained to police, said, "Beef is being sold here since years. Though the government has banned it, it is still being sold. Now time has come when police should crackdown on these anti-social elements.
