The 3D computer-animated film, inspired by the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, won the first Oscar for its directors Don Hall, Chris Williams and producer Roy Conli.
While it was Hall and Conli's first Oscar nomination, Williams' first nod came in 2008 for his animated feature film "Bolt".
"Thank you Academy. This has been an amazing year for animated films. Thank you Walt Disney, cast and crew for your passion," Williams said in his acceptance speech.
When the talented misfits group together to fight a dangerous villain, they gain an unlikely ally, a gentle healthcare bot named Baymax.
Walt Disney Animation Studios created new software technology to produce the film's animated visuals. Film's voice cast included Scott Adsit, Ryan Potter, Daniel Henney, T J Miller and Jamie Chung.
"Big Hero 6" triumphed over "How To Train Your Dragon 2", "The Boxtrolls", "Song of the Sea" and "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" to emerge the winner.
