A criminal from Bihar who also has links with Maoists, Chand Miyan alias Amin Miyan had provided arms and men for killing a BJP leader from Kalyan in the district, police said today.
Miya (37), accused in January 23 Ara court blast, had been brought here from Ara jail in Bihar for investigation, a senior officer of anti-extortion cell (AEC) of Thane police said.
The AEC, which is investigating a conspiracy to murder BJP leader Mahesh Patil, had earlier arrested seven persons including Suraj Khan.
Khan, police said, had got the contract to kill Mahesh Patil from Kunal Patil, an NCP leader and a builder (also arrested). Kunal had had some feud with Mahesh.
"After accepting the contract, Khan met Chand Miya in Bihar. He told Miya that they would get Rs 5-10 lakh for killing, and requested Khan to provide boys and weapons," said senior police inspector N T Kadam of AEC.
Police had last month arrested Khan and six others, including four youths from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, before the plan could be executed.
Miya and some others are accused of carrying out a blast at Ara court this January to get gangster Lambu Sharma released; two persons including a policeman were killed in the blast.
Chand, wanted in at least 20 cases of murder, extortion, dacoity, etc., and who was absconding for the last two years, was arrested in May. According to police, he also had links with Naxals.
Kadam said the investigation showed that those in the business of contract killing were now relying on men from northern states.
"We are interrogating Chand Miya to find out if he and others had taken on more such jobs here," Kadam said.
