Satyajit Ray's stories for children are still unsurpassed in popularity, but little does one know that his 'Feluda' stories had to pass through the hands of his wife Bijoya Ray before publication, Ray's son Sandip said.
Sandip Ray, a filmmaker himself, said his mother was a strong critic of his father's writings and she was merciless in editing them, except for two Feluda stories 'Golokdham Rahosyo' and 'Samaddarer Chabi'.
These two stories are being turned into a single movie by Ray junior, named "Double Feluda", which he described as a tribute to the maestro.
"Baba made these two works so compact that Maa could not change a single sentence," Sandip recalled.
He said that Ray entirely depended on Bijoya, an actress and costume designer for Satyajit's films, for assessing the potential," he said.
Sandip said he deeply missed the passing away of Bibhu Bhattacharya, who played writer-companion and comic character Jatayu in Sandip's Feluda series. The director is yet to find a replacement for Bibhu, who passed away in 2011.
He said that he had to do without Jatayu's character in some Feluda movies including "Double Feluda" but he will retain the part in future projects.
For future Feluda films, Ray junior said at the trailer launch of "Double Feluda", he was scanning through CVs of potential Jatayus.
"I am now in search of Jatayu for future projects on Feluda and scanning the CVs. I have also asked an FM channel to host a contest about who could fit the bill," he said.
Sabyasachi Chakraborty, who is making a comeback in in detective Feluda's role, recalled that Ray too had despaired about original Jatayu exponent Santosh Dutta's death and resolved not to do any Feluda film in future.
"However Babuda (as Sandip is fondly called in the Bengali film industry) had promised to cast me if he makes any Feluda film in future and he helped me realise my dreams first in tellyfilm 'Baksho Rahasyo' and then in feature 'Bombaier Bombete' which had become a blockbuster," Sabyasachi said.
