Eyeing a bigger pie in drought-hit backward Bundelkhand of Uttar Pradesh in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has started focussing on the area well in advance.
The party, which has not only created a new Bundelkhand unit separating it from Kanpur region, also passed a separate resolution during its two-day state executive committee meeting which concluded today.
The BJP is enthusiastic about it chances as the party had made inroad in Bundelkhand region where it won three Assembly seats out of 19, ending its drought in the region.
In its resolution, the party alleged that SP, BSP and Congress governments were responsible for the economic backwardness of Bundelkhand.
It said that due to lack of compensation either from the state or Central government, the farmers of the drought-hit area were forced to commit suicide and alleged that between 2004 to 2012 around 1,600 people committed suicide.
The party has demanded the state government to give compensation to farmers affected by drought and hailstorm.
It also demanded compensation at the rate of Rs 20,000 per acre to the farmers affected by supply of damaged seeds, besides demanding an inquiry of non-payment of insurance amount to the community to be given under crop insurance scheme.
