Pension scheme for journalists on anvil: Tarun Gogoi

With a view to provide financial help to retiring scribes, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said his govermment is thinking of implementing a pension scheme for journalists.
Addressing a ceremony during the launch of logo for journalists of Assam at the Central Hall of Legislative Assembly here, Gogoi also announced a hike in the amount sanctioned under the Journalists' Welfare Medical Scheme to Rs 10 crore from the existing Rs one crore.
"Journalists and media persons play a very major role in our democracy by not only providing information but also enlightening the masses and pointing out the shortcomings and opportunities," he said.
Gogoi said many journalists face adverse situation after retirement from their jobs.
"So we are thinking of implementing a pension policy for them," he said.
During the event, five senior and ailing journalists from the state were provided financial assistance of Rs one lakh and Rs 50,000.
