During his brief interaction with reporters at the city airport, the former J&K chief minister said a state should not remain without government.
"I don't know if they (BJP and PDP) will form government or not. But, our party has been telling them to form government as they have numbers. A state must have a government," Abdullah said.
He said it was necessary to take forward the common minimum programme the BJP and PDP had agreed to for forming their coalition government.
Uncertainty over formation of government in J&K grew today with PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti saying she will take a call after "reassessing" whether ally BJP's government at the Centre would take substantive steps in a "set time-frame" to address the "core" political and economic issues of the state.
Meanwhile, Abdullah also welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to ease tension between India and Pakistan by creating an atmosphere of friendship.
