The erstwhile Hyderabad State of Nizam was merged with the Indian Union on September 17, 1948 following the intervention of the country's first Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Patel.
Describing September 17 as 'Telangana Liberation Day', the BJP has been demanding that the day be celebrated officially.
In a memorandum submitted to the governor today, the opposition party also demanded that the Telangana freedom movement be made part of the school syllabus.
Telangana BJP president K Laxman had recently undertaken a week-long yatra in different districts of the state, demanding that the day be celebrated officially.
The BJP proposes to organise a public meeting on September 17 on the issue.
