A phone call in the wee hours today about bombs allegedly planted at Ambala Cantonment (Cantt) Railway station here sent security agencies into a tizzy, who later found it was a hoax.

Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF) and district police along with bomb squad conducted a thorough search of the station premises but no suspicious material was discovered, a police official said.

Rinku, a resident of Yamunanagar, had informed police that two persons, belonging to Uttar Pradesh, had given him a bag and offered him a handsome amount for keeping it safe in his house, police said.

He told the police that they took the bag from him two days ago and as he heard them whisper, he suspected that some explosive was kept in the bag which was to be planted at Ambala Cantt railway station.

On receiving the information, senior officers of GRP and RPF rushed to the station followed by the deputy commissioner of Ambala police. The bomb disposal squad was subsequently summoned and a thorough search of the railway station was conducted, sources said.

DCP Surender Pal Singh said that besides railway station, search was conducted at the bus stand, petroleum depot of IOC and other sensitive spots. No suspicious material was recovered and it was a hoax call, he said.  Rinku has been taken in custody for interrogation, the DCP said.
