Having portrayed a self-possessed group theatre figure, prominent stage personality-actor Kaushik Sen agrees his character in the new Bomkesh Bakshi film 'Sajarur Kanta' has Macbethian traits.
"Yes, the frustrations and desperations, so typical of passionate theater activists in Kolkata, come to the fore in new Bomkesh Bakshi film through my portrayal of the figurehead of a troupe staging Tagore's 'Raktokarobi' which runs parallel to the plot of the main story," the 'Iti Mrinalini' actor told PTI here.
Kaushik, whose theatre group had created waves on the Bengali stage with social-political documentation, says the film's references to rift within group theatre bear resemblance to the real life situation to an extent.
"The film 'Sajarur Kanta' has rich literary elements having strong allusions to the Bard's 'Raktokarobi' as well as the Macbethian twist to my character in the end as you pointed out truly," the Arko in epochal 'Kalpurush' on small screen 20 years back, said at the premier.
Having been part of two back to back films of Bomkesh Bakshi, veteran Tollywood actor Biswajit Chakroborty said, "Saibal had been planning for this film for years. And he follows his own pace. Perhaps that shows in the near total perfection of his frames."
"Some film makers make three films in a year, Saibal comes up with one film in as many days." Biswajit, having got critical acclaim in Anjan Dutta's 70s' era film 'Dutta vs Dutta' said.
"I had been inspired by Rinadi (Aparna Sen) all along after I settled for Sajarur Kanta years back and bought the film rights. And Kankon (Konkona Sen Sharma) turned up as the water in a vessel which assumes the shape of the container. She is that flexible and versatile. I needed to cash on her edginess for this role," Saibal signed off.
Produced by Macneill Media 'Sajarur Kanta' was premiered at state-run theatre complex Nandan with Aparna Sen present among others.
