Factories in India's biggest prison Tihar Jail which produce bakery products, textiles, home decor among other goods have registered a record turnover of over Rs 32 crore during the last financial year.
With uninterrupted supply of raw material, increase in budget allocation and setting up of additional infrastructure especially in the jail's carpentry unit, the factories have increased their production and registered a 2.5 times increase in their turnover-- a jump of around 20 crore compared to last year's Rs 12 crore.
It is estimated that next year turnover would be around Rs 40 crore.
"The turnover of the jail factory so achieved including the Bakery unit is Rs 32,17,35,497 which is a record in the history of Tihar Jail against the turnover of Rs 12,20,07,032 during the corresponding financial year 2011-12," a Tihar Jail spokesperson said.
Tihar jail factory has a carpentry, weaving (handloom and powerloom), tailoring, chemical, handmade paper, commercial art and bakery units.
Around 12,000 inmates work in the factories -- situated in sub jail number 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9 -- to produce food items, furniture and clothes which are sold at various retail shops in the national capital.
The jail's carpentry unit had a turnover of whopping Rs 23.14 crore, tailoring unit of Rs 79.34 lakh, paper unit of Rs 1.08 crore, weaving of Rs 27.68 lakh, chemical Rs 1.89 crore and bakery unit of Rs 4.97 crore.
Apart from providing additional areas of manufacturing and infrastructure, especially in the carpentry unit including two new sheds and overall constant supervision, professional management practises adopted by Tihar Jail factory administration and constant support and hard work of inmates engaged in the entire process hs also helped, the spokesperson said.
The carpentry unit registered the high turnover due to the supply of dual desk to Delhi government school, which are premium quality and reasonably priced.
The unit, earlier used to produce 200-225 desks daily which has now been increased to 400 desks per day.
It is estimated that next year turnover would be around Rs 40 crore, he added.
There are a total of ten sub-jails in the Tihar complex.
