Pilgrims would now be able to use their mobile phones during the pilgrimage as BSNL has agreed to provide the pre-paid SIM cards with roaming facilities, the spokesman said.

He said the arrangement had materialised after the chairman of the Amarnath Shrine Board and Jammu and Kashmir governor N N Vohra took up the issue with the union communications ministry.

The SIM cards will be sold only to registered Yatris at special counters set up at the Nunwan and Baltal base camps, the spokesman said.

The SIM cards will be operative during the four days of the pilgrim's journey to the shrine from either of the two routes, he added.

The pilgrimage - the yatra - to the Shri Amarnath cave shrine is scheduled to begin on June 25.
