Campaign on Majuli to be part of NE Fest beginning tomorrow

The third edition of the North East Festival showcasing the diverse culture and heritage of the region, including Majuli, will begin here tomorrow.
The three-day festival, to be held at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi, will also promote the North East as the tourism destination for both domestic and foreign travellers.
This time the event will have a special awareness campaign on Majuli, the world's largest river island with a population of 1,50,000 people, which will be held on Saturday, a release issued here said.
Majuli, the island on the mighty Brahmaputra, is also the abode of Vaishnavism in Assam. Its scared monasteries attract tourists from across the globe.
But this island with such unique geographical and cultural significance could soon disappear due to large-scale erosion and floods every monsoon.
A documentary will also be screened to highlight Majuli's heritage, its captivating natural beauty and its painful ordeal every monsoon due to floods and erosion.
Lou Majaw, rock legend from Shillong, will be the star attraction on the opening day. As many as 40 music bands, including Parikrama, and 30 dance forms promise to make the festival one of the biggest cultural festivals outside the region. Brand ambassador Zubeen Garg will also perform during the festival.
This year's attraction of the festival include football that has a huge fan following in the Northeast. About 20 teams from colleges of the National Capital Region and clubs of the Northeast are engaged in the competition from October 9.
