Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett, who is coming to India to attend the 'Women in the World' summit tomorrow, will moderate a panel about the refugee crisis in Syria.
Tina brown, renowned journalist, author and the founder of 'Women in the World', is bringing some of the internationally recognised names including Blanchett, Deepa Mehta, Shabana Azmi, Madhuri Dixit, Nandita Das, Naina Lal Kidwai, Obiageli Ezekwesili and Samantha Power to the event tomorrow.
Brown says these celebrities help bring spotlight to issues plaguing women across the globe.
"They want to share the spotlight with those who do not have that kind of voice. Cate Blanchett is coming all the way to India because she wants to shine a light on the refugee crisis in Syria. She will moderate a panel on that with Lynsey Addario, a photojournalist who has done some remarkable coverage in Syria," Brown told PTI in an interview.
The former Vanity Fair editor says she had invited Bollywood actor Aamir Khan to the summit recently.
"The big women are there of their own desire. They see it as an authentic platform. It is a kind of living theatre on human right issues.
"This is why we had invited Aamir Khan to the summit because we wanted to bring to the stage a man who had championed women's cause. He brought his huge spotlight to illuminate these issues and it was inspiring for the men in the audience."
In its maiden trip to India, the summit is largely focusing on women's voices but Brown is confident that they will expand further next year to engage with more such names from India.
